Beyond Medicine: Building Trust in Liberia

A week can change everything, for you and for them.

When our missions pastor Nathan returned from Liberia last month, he brought back more than stories. He brought back a vision of what's possible when medical excellence meets Christian love in action.

In the heart of Kakuta, Liberia's third-largest city, Dr. Chris Hena is doing something revolutionary. This fearless Liberian physician—who once refused to renounce her faith to practice medicine in communist Russia—has built a sustainable medical clinic that's transforming her community one patient at a time.

But here's what Nathan discovered: the greatest need isn't just medical. It's trust.

After decades of civil war and systemic corruption, Liberia is rebuilding from the ground up. People survive on $2 a day. A government hospital sits burned and partially restored. And sometimes, patients would rather wait two years for "free" care than pay $1.50 for immediate treatment—because free is all they've known from well-meaning missions.

Dr. Chris is changing that narrative. Her clinic operates sustainably, training local staff, charging fair prices, and proving that development—not just relief—can work. But she needs partners who understand her vision.

This is where you come in.

Nathan saw opportunities everywhere. Land that costs $300 per acre and grows almost anything. Hundreds of children in villages who need basic care. A surgical center waiting for specialists. Most importantly, he saw individuals hungry for the kind of transformation that only comes through Christ-centered discipleship.

"The greatest value to society is a righteous man or woman who is trustworthy, honest, dependable, hardworking—looking out not only for their own interests, but the interests of others," Nathan reflected. "That's true in Liberia, and it's true in Memphis."

The medical needs are specific: dentists, surgeons, dermatologists, pediatricians, nurses, and general practitioners. But the opportunity is universal: to demonstrate God's kingdom through excellent care, genuine relationships, and intentional discipleship.

Unlike typical medical missions, you won't see hundreds of patients in a week. Instead, you'll invest in sustainable systems, train local staff, and build relationships that outlast your visit. You'll stay in a comfortable guesthouse, eat good food, and work alongside Dr. Chris and her dedicated team.

Most importantly, you'll discover what Nathan did: that being blessed to be a blessing isn't just about your medical skills—it's about showing up with Christ's heart for people desperate for change.

The question isn't whether you're qualified. It's whether you're willing.

The opportunities are everywhere—financial, developmental, and spiritual. If you squint, you can see the Garden of Eden. This trip changed how I see God’s heart for the nations.
